Athames

An athame is a ceremonial knife which is usually used for ritual and magickal purposes only, to direct energy. Usually, the athame has a double edged blade and short handle although the blade can also be curved, wavy, or a variety of other specifications. Many traditions associate the athame with the masculine principle and with the element of air, although some traditions associate it with fire.

Simple Rowan Athame

This simple athame is crafted from a single piece of beautifully grained rowan wood. The handle is filled with hedge-gathered herbs which are traditionally considered to be sacred to the Druids: mugwort, vervain, enchanter's nightshade, bluebell, juniper, knapweed, heather flowers, lavender and mistletoe. The herbs are permanently sealed inside with a protective plug of Celtic bog oak.

Lavender is a powerful herb which brings peace, harmony and encourages positive thought. Vervain is a sacred cleansing and purification herb. Juniper has strong associations with healing and mistletoe is added for its traditional connections with Druids. Mugwort has been used for millennia to aid clairvoyance, lucid dreaming and astral projection. Our ancestors drank tea made from the leaves and it has also been used in incenses or smoked to induce visions.
